Jn 8:36

Over time, the replicated mirror shards can completely cover the original mirror, distorting and fragmenting a person’s reflection of their true self. The person becomes used to their warped reflection; it feels like who they are, and it still does somewhat look like them. But it is not who they truly are, and it is not how their personhood is meant to be reflected to themselves, to their loved ones, and to the outside world. Living with these dissociations - living out of alignment with their true self - prevents a person from experiencing the peace, true joy, and purpose for which they were made.

Every single person has experienced some level of dissociation and fragmentation. But God wants to make us whole. He wants to remove the extra, damaged shards of protection, and extract any fragments of glass imbedded in us that continue to create painful wounds. He wants to restore our mirror to its original, pristine reflection of who we are meant to be.

Through the process of prayer ministry, Craig helps clients identify their dissociative parts. Jesus is invited to enter into the wounds and heal the trauma and pain once and for all. Once Jesus’ healing and love is experienced, the parts are no longer needed. The extra, protective shards of mirror are eliminated for good, and the individual is able to reflect who they truly are and who they were created to be. After the removal of their parts, so many clients experience peace in a new, lasting, life-altering way.

When not actively manifesting itself and ‘protecting’ the person, the dissociative part recedes into the background and unconscious realms of our minds. It only takes something remotely similar to the original experience, however, to trigger the part, generating often unwanted responses or intense feelings. As the parts do generally remain in the background, the majority of people go about their lives unaware of the fact that they are living a fragmented existence.

The truth is that God created the reaction of dissociation to protect people and allow them to experience traumas and still be able to function. But God did not intend for individuals to be chained by their parts or to be insulated from their pain forever.

An analogy may be helpful for a deeper understanding of dissociative parts and God’s healing process. Imagine a person whose image is reflected in a mirror. The mirror is spotless, and perfectly displays the truth and the beauty of the person and all that they were created to be. When that person experiences an overwhelming moment or situation, the force of that experience would often be enough to shatter their mirror. Instead of allowing the mirror that is the essence of the person to be destroyed, dissociation creates a partial shard of mirror over the top of the original, and this replicated portion takes the brunt of the impact.

An aspect of Craig’s approach is the mapping and removal of dissociative parts. Dissociation is normally brought up in discussions of war or abuse or severe trauma, but in reality it can occur any time a person experiences something that frightens, hurts, or overwhelms them. In these emotionally overwhelming moments, humans respond by segregating the experience within a separate “part” of their mind and personality. That part of us is equipped to bear the emotional stress that would be too much for us to handle otherwise. These dissociated parts appear to protect for a time, but the negative emotions will eventually bleed out into the rest of a person’s life, causing anxieties, troubled sleep, relational difficulties, and so many other issues.

Dissociative parts can be created instantly - through intense moments of fear or anxiety for example - or they can develop slowly, sometimes over years, through the continued experience of unmet needs.
